Yes. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, most commercial, public and multi-occupancy buildings in the UK must have a working fire alarm system.
Conventional systems group detectors by area or ‘zone’. Addressable systems can identify the exact detector triggered, making fault-finding and evacuations faster.
You should carry out a manual test every week, and have the system professionally serviced every 6 months to stay compliant.
Yes – we can inspect, upgrade, or take over maintenance of most existing or legacy systems, even if we didn’t install them.

A quick guide to the key terms we use when talking about fire alarm systems.
Term | What It Means |
---|---|
Conventional system | A basic system that splits the building into zones. Each zone is wired as a circuit and is best for small properties. |
Addressable system | A more advanced system where each device has its own address. This helps quickly locate faults or triggered alarms. |
Call point | A red manual switch (often “break glass”) that someone presses to trigger the fire alarm. |
Sounder | The siren or bell that makes a loud noise when the alarm is activated. |
Fire panel | The main control unit that monitors all alarm devices and shows if there's a problem. |
Detector | A device that senses smoke, heat or flame and sends a signal to the fire panel. |
BS 5839 | The UK standard that sets the rules for how fire alarm systems should be designed and maintained. |
L1–L5 categories | These show how much of a building is covered. L1 gives full protection everywhere. L5 covers only specific high-risk areas. |
Weekly test | A simple check done every week by a designated person to make sure the system still works. |
Maintenance certificate | A document proving that your fire alarm system has been professionally checked and serviced. |
